Elements used are those allowed to put the computer's central processing unit: two kinds of table, 2 u-shaped tubes and a straight bar that is normally between the 2 u-shaped tubes.<br /><br />First, I put the 2 tables together with screws and nuts, then I drilled 8 holes (4 on each table) to pass the collars and I join tables with my 2 u-shaped tubes using collars and cut them. Straight bar will block the tubes rotating. So I ventured off to IKEA and found the KVARTA clock. <br /><br />The clock is surprisingly simple to take apart. If you press the two tabs in the back of the clock, and the plastic face comes off. The minute and hour hands snap off. Instead of dumping the old Lack, we decided to buy another and turn them both into cushioned, upholstered ottomans.<br /><br />To try this hack at home (for one ottoman), you'll need an Ikea Lack end table, four four-inch Capita legs, one long board from the Ikea as-is section, plywood, 1.5" thick foam, about 1.5 yards of upholstery fabric, wood screws, and spray adhesive.  Handles are optional.<br /><br />You'll also need some common tools, like a sewing machine, a cordless drill/screwdriver, a saw, a miter board, and a staple gun. <br /><br /><b>Here's what you do:</b> <br />1) Shorten the Lack legs so that the top of the ottoman will be at a comfortable height for resting your legs.  We sawed off 4 inches to account for the Capita legs, leaving our Lack 14 inches tall and 22 inches wide. For us this meant 14" x 22" sides and a 22" x 22" bottom. <br />3) Attach the plywood rectangles to the sides of the Lack, one side at a time: liberally apply wood glue to the Lack legs and sides and screw on plywood, using clamps to hold the pieces together.  Because the Lack legs aren't flush with the side of the top piece and because the legs are hollow, it helps to have both glue and screws. We found 1.5" foam to be the optimum thickness, so this meant 17" x 25" sides and a 25" x 25" top. We scoured the fabric section at Ikea, but didn't find anything there that we liked, so we found ours at a local home fabrics store. <br />10) Sew fabric into a cube (sans bottom) and fit onto the padded cube.  It helps to do a few pieces at a time and adjust measurements if needed. <br />11) Turn the cube upside down and staple the fabric to the wooden bottom.  Make sure to pull the fabric tight as you do this, so there aren't bunches on the top of the ottoman.  This was our first upholstery job and it was not very difficult, even for the corners. <br />12) You now have an Ikea Lack ottoman!  The Capita legs can be adjusted in case your construction didn't yield an entirely level masterpiece.  Add an Ikea Trolsk serving tray for some munchies if you like. The brackets were mounted onto the inside of the cabinet door upside down. This is important because there are two threaded holes on each bracket that are designed to hold the shelf tight. These holes are used for the four knobs that stick out of the top and hold the bag in place. Assemble one shelving unit completely, except for the plastic feet, and the shelve nearest to the ground. Lay it down on the floor. <br />This will be the top. <br /><br />2. Put the long vertical pieces of metal in extension to the first unit you assembled, and decide how high you want it to be. <br /><br />3. Drill holes so that you can assemble the two units, measure the distance to the pre-drilled holes so it will be even. <br /><br />4. One day, it just didn't turn on. <br /><br />When I checked online to see if there were any quick fixes, I found plenty of company. Many people reported their Kulla had a mind of its own, cycling through the light settings in the middle of the night. <br /><br />But people still LOVED their Kullas! Many kept them as non-functional ornaments, unable to simply discard them. <br /><br />My 90-day warranty was up, I couldn't find my receipt and IKEA was a 2-hour drive, so I figured I was on my own. I loved my Kulla too. There had to be a way! <br /><br /><a href="http://www.shelterrific.com/2009/06/11/oh-no-my-ikea-kulla-lamp-is-possessed/">This post</a> shed some, uh, light on what I was up against: <br /><br /><br />Commenter Marc had gave me the confidence to take the lamp apart and the rest I improvised. Following are instructions on how to get the Kulla up and running when it becomes possessed or just dies totally. <br /><br />The problem is that the dimmer control board has burned out, so we are going to replace it. Remove the shade, bulb and wire shade support and unscrew plastic ring under the bulb. <br /><br />2. While holding the main lamp post with one hand, turn the entire top assembly with the other, using the plastic diffuser disc and the touch post for leverage. (You may prefer to have a helper hold the pole while you turn.) Unscrew the top assembly, feeding some cord slack through the grommet by the lamp's base if things seem to get difficult. <br /><br />3. With the top assembly off, it's time to separate the halves of the Kulla's skull! It's pretty easy but requires a firm hand. Grasp the threaded rod that secures the top assembly to the lamp post (I used big pliers called Channel Locks) and while holding the outer cup-shaped shell of the top assembly, push straight in on those threads until it gives and separates, breaking open the electrical chamber. I think what you are doing here is breaking a bead of adhesive that keeps the skull together. Finally, with firmness, free the cup-shaped half from the threaded rod entirely. This might require some jiggling at the very end. <br /><br />4. Next, free the dimmer control board from the inner skull by peeling the black plastic case away (it's held with double-sided foam tape. Open but don't discard the black plastic housing. We wil be reusing half of this plastic capsule for the new board. You will probably smell a burned electronics smell at this point; that's the old dimmer control board which is fried. <br /><br />5. Prepare the new board by breaking it out of its casing with a small putty knife or similar tool. Unfortunately its gray housing is slightly too bulky to fit into Kulla's skull. <br /><br />6. Now comes the brain transplant! For this step, match the black and white wire positions and substitute the gray wire of the new board for the blue wire of the old board: <br /><br />Remove the old, defective dimmer control board by clipping off the tiny zip ties, cutting off the black heat shrink tubing and un-crimping the connectors one at a time. I used a technique of wiring in the new board as I unwired the old: un-crimp one connector and attach the appropriate wire from the new board, the twist on the tiny, supplied wire nut. Then repeat the process for the other two crimped connections. This way you don't get confused by the loose wires that would otherwise result. I used a crimping tool to un-crimp, but pliers will do. <br /><br />7. When the new board is in and the wire nuts twisted tightly, use tiny zip ties to hold the wires together right near the wire nuts (just like the old ones that you cut off earlier). Clip off the tails of the zip ties. Wind electrical tape around the zip ties and wire nuts. <br /><br />8. Place the new dimmer control board (component-side first) into half of the black housing from the old board, leaving the heat sink as the exposed side. <br /><br />9. The eyelet on the yellow wire of the new board is too big, so we need to replace it with a smaller one from radio shack or a hardware store. I just cut off the original one, stripped a bit of wire and crimped a smaller one on to fit over the fitting of the touch post. <br /><br />10.TEST IT OUT! The moment of truth... put in a bulb, plug in the lamp and touch the exposed eyelet at the end of the yellow wire of the new dimmer board. The lamp should cycle through the various dimmer settings. Don't worry, no current runs through that piece. Actually at this point there should be nothing exposed that could cause a shock. Assuming it works, let's put Kulla back together! <br /><br />***UNPLUG THE LAMP AND REMOVE THE BULB!*** <br /><br />11. Using the double-sided tape supplied with the new board, stick the new board by its recycled housing back down into the Kulla skull interior floor from whence the old board came. <br /><br />12. Pack everything in nice and tight and press the two halves of the skull together. Holding the halves together, place the top assembly back onto the lamp post and screw it back on. When it is nice and tight, the skull will be closed up tightly again. <br /><br />13. Reassemble and enjoy!<br /><br />~ Nick Johnson, Portland, Maine

For best results, drill a hole in line with a leg, as you'll be able to secure the lamp power cable to the leg later.  <br /><br />Just remember not to drill the hole too wide, as you'll want the lamp to be a secure fit (though if you do - a length of insulation wrapped a few times around the arm before being inserted into the drilled hole will help). Once in place, you'll be able to swivel the arm freely. <br /><br />The lower shelf, from a second Frosta stool, is secured in place using four angle brackets, one for each leg. <br /><br />A couple of cord tidies stuck on the back of one leg to keep the power cable neat and out of sight, and you're done! <br /><br />(And in case anyone is wondering, the headphones are on a couple of superb Sieveking Sound Omega headphone stands - <a href="http://www.sieveking-sound.de/equipment/detail/id/16" target="_blank">details here</a>) <br /><br />~ Steve, Sydney, Australia
