I was seriously surprised that the little clock could be made to boom that loudly. Also love the 'aging' of the clock. Under-lit Galant work space

Len had a job for a few months where his office desperately needed to be refitted.  With a limited budget, he went to Ikea to find a way to make his work area more cool and funky.<br /><br />He says, "I succeeded, and a lot of the credit goes to this really easy hack of a Galant desk. There are several pieces in the Galant family.  I chose the silver <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40057457" target="_blank">A-Frame adjustable legs</a> and the Galant rectangular '<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S59838752" target="_blank">desktop with frame</a>.'  The desktop is glass, slick on the top surface and frosted (translucent) on the bottom surface.  The frame is a rectangle underneath the glass.  As soon as I saw this desk, I knew I had to find a way to light it from below.  A quick trip through the lighting department led me to the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30051494" target="_blank">Dinge</a> lights.  They are available in a translucent white/grey that goes perfectly with the silver painted frame of the desk.  When paired with the correct <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80087669" target="_blank">Sparsam</a> fluorescent bulbs two of these will consume less than 15W of power while providing a bright, crisp white light.<br /><br />If you screw open the clamp on the Dinge all the way it just exactly fits on the frame of the Galant desktop, pointing upwards to shine on the underside of the glass top. There was an old style 90s California light panel or whatever they call them; basically panels over fluorescents, like an office. I bought two packs of the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10128381" target="_blank">Grundtal spotlights</a> and some long pieces of baseboard moulding and double sided tape from my local hardware store. Using some nails, I attached the base of the lights to the baseboard, then hung up the baseboard with double sided<br />tape, which has now held successfully for almost two years. Fitted dishwasher for the Udden

Fitting a dishwasher drawer into the Udden system is quite a feat. Jerome does it with aplomb, even maintaining the brush steel look of the Udden.<br /><br />"When we upgraded to a new, larger apartment two years ago for our family of now four, we turned down the poor-excuse-for-a kitchen it was going to be fitted with, took the builder's  credit and went with our own selection of <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/range/10379/11836/" target="_blank">Udden free-standing components</a>.<br /><br />The upside of this relatively inexpensive product line by Ikea designer Ehl�n Johansson is the use of honest materials (all durable and recyclable, except for particle board) to achieve a modern, industrial look.  Its European space-conscious features are also great, but the downside was the higher cost of outfitting it with matching 24-inch kitchen appliances where we live, in North America.<br /><br />My Udden hack was to recycle my custom 3-drawer cabinet to fit a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FFisher-DS603FCSS-DishDrawer-Automatic-Adjustable%2Fdp%2FB0018D3UG4%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dhome-garden%26qid%3D1218470588%26sr%3D8-5&tag=ikeahacker-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325" target="_blank">Fisher & Paykel single Dishdrawer</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=ikeahacker-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" />, keeping only the top <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90049200" target="_blank">Varde drawer</a> for cutlery.  The cabinet was too narrow to accommodate the dishwasher.  Space was created to specifications by reducing the cabinet to its top third and by designing a platform that is both supported and suspended. Just what we need to store oven trays, cutting boards and regular trays.<br /><br />I still have to finalize some finishing touches to apply here and there.<br /><br />It's probably hard to tell from the pictures, but I still have not applied the grout to the tiles I set last month.<br /><br />I want to create a bookshelf in the left corner for our cooking books.<br /><br />One day, we plan on installing under-counter 24-inch refrigerator and freezer units, under the long counter on the left.  The space is there, waiting, and meanwhile we 'make do' with a full-size Fisher & Paykel refrigerator, which sits just outside the kitchen space.  It was just too obtrusive when it was located in the kitchen.  The counter space we gained in the trade-off was well worth it.<br /><br />This is not a kitchen for everyone.  I wanted it to be functional and not just for show.  There probably isn't as much storage as many people would like.  (We keep a pantry in the basement.)  The intent to downsize and simplify was deliberate.  I don't think it's OK to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a kitchen.<br /><br />I now have two modified Varde drawers for sale to anyone interested in doing the same thing."

Cats' scratch and snooze

Kelly makes a comfy scratching bed for her cats to claw and curl up.<br /><br />She says, "I don't think of them as hacks so much as unintended uses. I took two of the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/07437400" target="_blank">Bastant baskets</a> in the smaller size (roughly 22" x 12" x 9) and put cardboard scratching post refills in the bottom.  These are sold to fit in cardboard holders which don't look so nice and don't provide any snuggle space for the cat.  They're sold in multiple sizes, so you just have to take measurements to make sure they fit, or be willing to cut the cardboard. Gadget docking and charging station

Caro made a handy docking and charging station to store her gadgets and charge them at the same time. Keeps things in order too.<br /><br />Caro says, "My desk was a mess with gizmos and their chargers. Plus, I needed a place to put my closed notebook when I'm at my desk and using a wireless keyboard, mouse and a monitor.<br /><br />To make myself a combined docking and charging station, I used the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40104152">Ikea Estetisk storage with compartments</a> desk accessory.<br /><br />First, I laid the Estetisk flat and I drilled a series of 3/4 inch holes in the back/bottom of the compartments and in the back/bottom panel.  In the first photo you can see  the holes on the back/bottom panel, but not the others. The wires which attach to a surge protector (e.g. phone charger) go through both holes and down the surge protector on the floor. I cut these to fit the cubbies and just glued them, to create more space.  I now have space for my camera, ipod and nano, a bluetooth earpiece, headphones, a pda, and room left over for glasses. And all the extra wires are hidden in the back compartment. Someday I'll stain or paint so that everything matches."

(Luckily he's not exactly an avid fisherman, so I think the box had only been used once or twice, therefore it's not stinky). While flipping through an issue of Domino magazine I came across an amazing walk in closet with an equally amazing jewelry storage cabinet. I quickly flipped to the sources page, and discovered that the jewelry chest of my dreams was designed by <a href="http://store.exit-art.com/genech1.html" target="_blank">George Nelson</a> <span style="font-style: italic;">(pic, right)</span>. Sadly it was $1400. Slightly out of my budget, especially for a jewelry chest.<br /><br />Even though I couldn't get the Nelson chest, at least now I knew what TYPE of thing I wanted, and so began my quest for the DIY version. After mulling it over for about 6 months, I happened to be picking up some frames at our local Ikea, and lo and behold, what did I find but the perfect substitute in these <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60073300" target="_blank">drawers</a>.<br /><br />Now all I needed was the base. I thought about trying to track down a vintage side table base, but in the end I found what I needed at Ikea as well, by using the base of the Fornbro side table. <span style="font-style: italic;">(can't find the link on Ikea's website)</span><br /><br />1) I first stained the pieces (2 coats of stain) and gave them about 8 coats of varnish with some sanding after the second and sixth coats. I needed some way to keep all the earrings and necklaces untangled, so the tiny metal tins with glass lids from Lee Valley Tools were perfect. I used 'No More Nails' but I think a lot of other types of thick glue would work.<br /><br />I'm so happy with how this project came out, and most importantly I will now be giving ALL my jewelry the love it deserves, simply because now I can actually find it all! The only thing I might have to change is the base. It seems a little less stable than I would like it to be. I may add the round table top (which I did not use) and place it under the entire thing attaching it to the legs, basically using the entire sidetable as it was intended, but upside down. I would then paint the table/base entirely white, since the round table top is black and doesn't really go with the look I'm going for.<br /><br />It's a pretty easy project, and I'm very happy with how it came out. I think it would look equally good with some other techniques, like painting the wood, or covering it with wallpaper or wrapping paper."

She says, "We couldn't afford a proper pot rack, nor accommodate one, due to the height of the cathedral ceiling in the kitchen." The shelving is mounted to the wall on boards that were left by the previous owner.
