I did about 5 or 6 layers over the course of a few days, giving it ample time to dry in between coats.  Then I put together the cabinet and used heart shaped knobs instead as a decorative accent that I found <a href="http://www.dlawlesshardware.com/hearknobinsa.html" target="_blank">online</a>. Put the outer side panel on the top of the inside panel, so that the height on both sides will be even. <br /><br />5. Install the GRUNDTAL rails on VIKA AMON. In order to fit them and still be able to unscrew the pipe to put on a roll, you have to cut the pipes about 1.5" both. Before cutting the pipes hammer the part where you put the screw in inside the pipe, a little bit more than 1.5" back. <br /><br />6. Fasten TROFAST onto VIKA AMON with screws. We used 10 wood screws. <br /><br />7. Put the MALA paper rolls on. <br /><br />8. Put the drawer rails in and insert the drawers. <br /><br />We actually screwed the tabletop on before installing the GRUNDTAL rails. Recently I encountered Pottery Barn's amazing high desk (their Bedford line high desk) and a 20-watt light bulb went off.  <br /><br />The torsion boxes are excellent table top surfaces because they are perfectly flat, super strong, and light weight. All I needed were 'legs'. Measure torsion boxes you want to use. Especially the exact location of the dowel holes in the bottom of the torsion boxes.  <br />2. I used Sketchup to visualize/create/dimension the entire desk, then laid out the parts in Sketchup and printed their dimensions.  <br />3. I routed dadoes in the plywood, then cut out the plywood parts.  <br />4. Glue the plywood boxes together and drill the dowel holes exactly where they will meet the torsion box dowels. Use a 7/16" drill bit here.  <br />5. The only modification to the torsion boxes is to drill out the dowel holes to 7/16" - it is next to impossible to find metric wooden dowels here in America (note to self: grab as many as possible during next IKEA visit). I think the dowels are 11mm from the factory. Good luck finding 11mm dowels.   <br />6. Time for face frames. Cut out the face frame pieces. You will need a lot of face frame pieces because you must build face frames on both sides of each box. A pain in the butt but whatever.  <br />7. Nail-gun time: nail the face frame pieces to the plywood boxes. This has to be pretty close to perfect because the human eye can/will catch errors.  <br />8. After the face frames are attached, stain/paint your boxes.  <br />9. Add adjustable feet to the bottom of your new bookcase 'legs'.  <br />10. Determine center of gravity. I balanced the bowl on a bic ballpoint pen, and then pushed the pen tip out to mark the center. <br />2. Cut broomstick to length. I used 17 cm. <br />3. Drill holes in bowls (5mm) and broomstick-ends (4 mm) (but depends on the screw size you use) <br />4. Attach with screws. <br /><br />I used original IKEA screws from the leftover-metal-bin in the as-is-section at IKEA. For extra coziness while working late hours in the lab. <br /><br />I needed a whiteboard and had this spare IKEA table top: frosted glass plate with an aluminum frame. While putting it up onto the wall with two strong hooks, I thought it would make a great diffuser for a lamp. Let it be a white board and a source of indirect light in arbitrary colors. And that's the idea of my FnordBoard. <br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br /><b>FnordBoard Parts and Assembly </b><br />To make a backlit whiteboard, a FnordlichtMini is a perfect match. That's an inexpensive Open Source RGB color changing LED hardware, based on an Atmel AVR ATmega8. Several of these can be chained up and individually controlled. Since my whiteboard should be backlit, one or more of those shall be mounted on the bottom side of the table top. It should shine right across the glass plate, so a lot of light would be diffused. The table top is actually an IKEA Vika Lauri. The bottom side is frosted, the top side is easy to write on with a whiteboard marker.<br /><br /><b>Frosted glass table top with aluminum frame </b><br />The frame is held together by each a metal plate and four rivets in each corner. I had some of these white plastic caps that come e.g. with IKEA Expedit book cases . (One is supposed to affix these shelves with a metal brackets to the wall, covering each bracket with a plastic cap.) Conveniently, one of these RGB color changing lamps just fits onto one of those white plastic caps. Even more conveniently, when sliding a plastic cap under the metal plate holding the table top frame together, it just fits under the threaded hole so you can bolt it down. <br /><br />I did have some spare M10x40 bolts (from Sultan legs), yet the head would've sticked way out. I cut the bolt off with a metal saw, so it would be flush with the metal bump, about 22mm (7/8th in) long. To make it a headless bolt, there shall be a slot in one end so it can be turned with a screw driver. It should look like this: <br /><br /><b>Picture Headless Bolt </b><br />With the plastic cap bolted down, a FnordlichtMini can be attached to it. You might want to use a bolt for this, since the PCBs have mounting holes. Last step: add power cabling. That can be drawn along inside the mortise of the aluminum frame.
