Normally, the unit is supported by dowelling rods that run through both upright dividers: since that was no longer possible, I needed to use additional rods to support the two uprights in isolation. <br /><br />My speakers and record collection fit snugly around the result. They were on sale at $20 from $50 in the as is section. It took 10 boxes, all of their inventory, to build this frame. Also, for the supporting slats underneath, I used metal cooling racks that were also in the as is at 1.50 a piece. I didn't want a regular computer case as it would probably make me sick sooner or later, so after looking through IKEA folder I decided to go with the MICKE drawer unit which seemed to be big enough to fit an mATX motherboard in the bottom drawer. I ordered a cheap mATX case that I could use as a donor for the frame and motherboard tray, picked up an all white unit from my local Ikea store and got to work... <br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />1. Cut the computer chasis so you have the motherboard tray along with what has left off of the frame. It's important not to cut too much as the frame will be usefull to hold HDD cage, usb ports and drawer's front. Screw the frame to the plywood and install all the hardware. Place the power button somewhere convenient (I used double sided tape for that) and 'front' USB ports so they are accessible after opening the drawer (zip ties helped me here). <br /><br />5. The only "problem" was that he's got a twin sister so I needed to create a "girly" version for her. (Things tend to come in twos for twins.) That's how I came up with this play table idea. Jigsaw this shape out and then put the box in the hole and outline the little corners (you'll understand when you look at the under side of the box). Then simply refine the corners and you're done. The hole won't be the exact shape but it's a snug enough fit and the sawing is done in about 15 minutes. <br /><br />When buying the flowers, get the ones that have a plastic only stem (the red flower on the pic isn't one of them). The flowers with metal wires are hard to cut and can be sharp. The flower heads of the plastic only variety simply pop off.<br /><br />~ Bal�zs, Budapest, Hungary

Then two coats of paint (Valspar in Rugged Suede). On the drawers is Allen and Roth paintable wallpaper from Lowes. Then I added two coats of this Minwax Polycrylic to the whole piece. Since it's water based it's easy to use and clean up. And I used satin finish because I didn't want this piece too shiny. The blinds used in these pictures are natural coloured ones and this is probably your best bet as these are minimally treated and the wood stain is sticking to them well. Even with one set of blinds you will get more than 1 m2 of tiles. <br /><br />Start by cutting the strings for the blind assembly. Then cut the pieces so that you get tiles. One way to do this is to use a sharp knife and cut in to the wood on both sides and then break of the pieces. You could also use a fine saw or a band saw. To get the staining to stick you should sand the pieces or you could use a grater to rough up the surface. Only dip a short while or you will distort them. Let them dry on paper towels. The powder based wood stains is cheap and you can mix the colour solutions how you like to get more colours. Some of the tiles in the pictures are dipped in several colour solutions to get a different effect. <br /><br />Use the tiles to decorate, either by using wood glue or by using double sided tape.
