I'll be posting a series of lighting and lamp hacks today and the next two days. Here are the first few. <br /><br /><b>A movable pendant light<br /></b><br />A hacker who prefers to be anonymous sends me this fantastic movable pendant lamp.<br /><br />"We have transformed a cheap ceiling lamp (<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40128780">Melodi</a>) into a work lamp. It's the Skyar, I think, but it is no longer available on Ikea's site. You could do a similar thing with the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30124301" target="_blank">Horup</a>.<br /><br />Leslie tells me, "We recently hacked an Ikea lamp. We then slipped a curtain rod through the holes and created a small closet type setup for our baby's room. We can take out the shelves as he gets bigger, but for now it's incredibly wonderful to have. We use the knobs on the outside to hang his bath towels. Simple, but perfect for us."

Squeeze a big pantry into a small space

Dhiraj creates a neat pantry space with smart use of the Akurum. I love how they just seem to disappear into the wall.<br /><br />"Here is my conversion of the pantry in our newly acquired but small home in Ontario, Canada. I used three <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S99826422" target="_blank">Akurum high cabinets with the Arlig doors</a>. The cabinets had to be reduced in depth from 12 inches to 7 inches to fit flush into the available space. No more numb fingers and blisters.<br /><br />He says, "When revamping my workspace a few weeks ago - and not in the mood to unscrew my Jerker desk by hand - I thought I might try sacrificing one of the countless hand wrenches I've picked up from Ikea. Now we know Ikea's thick padded potholders make fantastic tea cosies too.<br /><br />Liza says, "I love tea in a teapot, and it's hard to find a good, well padded, tea cosy in the US, so a few years ago I started making my own. Usually I make them from scratch, but it occurred to me that I could use these Ikea <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80124073" target="_blank">potholders</a> that had been lying around unused. They were too big as potholders, but worked fine for an individual teapot cosy.<br /><br />1. I cut each square into a bulbous, semi-circular shape, keeping the binding attached on one potholder, cutting it off on the other.<br /><br />3. I joined the 2 semicircles together at their round sides by fitting the attached binding over both of them and sewing together. I actually had to hand sew this part, as my sewing machine wasn't up to the thickness, so this was the most time-consuming part (about an hour). Mary wanted a big workspace, similar to a drafting space that she could put against a wall and use as a desk, sewing table, and all around multi-purpose workspace. Here's what she did, combining some old (non Ikea furniture) with Ikea legs and a kitchen countertop.  She says, "I also wanted there to be a gap between the desktop and the base cabinets so I could use the space as extra storage. I tend to have piles of paper on my desk and I wanted to be able to tuck them away neatly without actually putting them in a drawer or cabinet. I had some old <a href="http://www.westelm.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=17001&amp;amp;amp;amp;langId=-1&amp;amp;amp;amp;catalogId=17002&amp;amp;amp;amp;viewSetCode=E&amp;amp;amp;amp;partNumber=WE-PRODp018&amp;amp;amp;amp;retainNav=true&amp;amp;amp;amp;parent_category_rn=&amp;amp;amp;amp;cmsrc=SCH&amp;amp;amp;amp;parentId=storage" target="_blank">West Elm modular storage furniture</a> already so I decided to use these as the base.  <div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiax4TRC1VT1p9PVlHtwJ3HEo7cpF1ipc-nnuQbkMZxuMPT-rvFsaXoDy12LEwFw103hhuw2QmoFx86coTjMAjGzTd4tLOL72Vu3JEB7n-gJvQS4msGCGgV86bmT1e2RS6AaPDAnaYrOI2P/s1600-h/desk1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="border: 0pt none ; background-color: transparent; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO9X0I5MySV7fT9UnzO9hFJG94p2g_9IE-qJNkx-pney9G_nbErXCNhYva3Uoq0kbw1v52Tb8fDLw3pILnM-GaxLXI2uEnVvp7jo-LhrkUvX_KQbYPJUaAXT5yk57gMyarqD3QDK3ifKnb/s400-r/desk1.jpg" style="border: 0pt none ;" /></a></div>- I took four of the square cabinet components (used in two sets) fastened each set together in the back and added extra re-enforcement to the bottom of both by hammering an extra board beneath each set. Then I added four <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00054564" target="_blank">6" ikea capita legs</a> to the bottom of each set.  - Then I used the 2 feet from the base of the West Elm storage unit and mounted them to the center and top of each West Elm cabinet set I had already put together.  - To create the gap, I used another eight <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00054564" target="_blank">6" ikea capita legs</a> (four for each cabinet set) and added them to the top of the cabinets. The only problem was that the Ikea legs were 6" and the West Elm base feet that I had used were seven. So I had some extra strips of wood lying around (almost 1'" thick) and screwed these into the top of the cabinets first, then screwed the Ikea legs on top of the 1" strips of wood to make the required 7" inches.  - My super (incidentally named 'Angel') was kind enough to help me lift the 55lb slab of 8 foot woodblock <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20010668" target="_blank">(Ikea pronomen countertop)</a> on to the entire contraption so it rested lightly on the Ikea legs. I used the hardware that came with the countertop to attach the desktop to the West Elm base feet attached to the cabinet. This way the Ikea countertop was firmly attached to the base West Elm cabinets and resting on top of the Ikea legs along the length of the cabinets. So it's stable but difficult to move but that's ok since it's 8' long and I have no desire to move it. The hanging pendant lamps I made according to a hack posted right here (thank you thank you) out of Ikea cutlery containers, and light sockets. And the chair covering is also an Ikea <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/83235110" target="_blank">sheepskin throw rug.</a>"
