Mid way of top step should do it. Only 1 shelf went on said wall as originally planned, and we used the other 3 in alternative ways.<br /><br />The red shelf, we turned into a holder for my  partner's keyboard (pic above). We have this small guestroom he uses as  his "study" and we wanted a floating shelf to hold his keyboard so it  wouldn't take any space on the floor. That's where the remaining shelf  came in handy! We assembled it in a different way (see picture), and to  do so we drilled additional holes in the shelf so we could join the two  Z-shaped parts together as we needed, using a couple more of those small  wooden Ikea pegs. <br /><br />Then we hung it to the wall and put  3 L-brackets under it for support. Then we added some L-brackets under each horizontal section of the shelf to hold it in place and provide additional support. We divided it into 3 smaller L sections so it was easier to handle and we could drill the necessary holes into the wall more comfortably, assembling the next bit once the previous one was in place. <br /><br />We started from the bottom, to form the larger bottom shelf, then proceeded upwards until the whole thing was securely in place. <br /><br />We used some flat metallic brackets to join the two shelves at the bottom. Let's just start there. <br /><br />I saw the smooth SPONTAN magnet board at IKEA and assumed that because it was smooth it was a marker board as well as a magnet board.  Well... you know what happens when you assume, right? <br /><br />So I couldn't get the marks off the board and pretty much decided the board was junk.  All I wanted was a write and magnet combination.  Then I realized I had chalkboard paint in the basement left over from another project.   <br /><br />This hack is SUPER easy.  Even a caveman could do it.   <br /><br />I lightly sanded the magnet board down and put three coats of chalkboard paint on it.  That's it. The objective was to utilize space behind the knee walls which abound in our Cape Cod�style house. Destination of STUVA units was knee wall beside each of our daughters� beds. Units we chose were two STUVA units of same height which we planned to stack on top of each other. We configured bottom unit to have 2 small top drawers and larger bottom drawer. Top unit was skinnier and only had shelves with no doors.<br /><br /><b>Wall Preparation</b><br />Stacked STUVA unit was 50.5" high. The knee wall can only accommodate a 46" high unit. Opening of appropriate size was cut out of the wall using plasterboard saw and hand saw. Simple inverted-C platform using 2"x3" studs was provided to support the bottom of unit. The total height of stacked unit now became 45.5" which fitted in 46" high wall opening. STUVA units had flimsy cardboard backs so �" MDF boards were nailed to backs. Some old newspaper was stuffed into the cavity between these 2 boards. Two 2"x2" steel straps were screwed into backs of STUVA top and bottom units. Holes were pre-drilled at the back bottom of lower unit. Bottom was anchored to inverted-C platform under it using 3-3" nails. Additional holes were pre-drilled on each side and anchored to wood blocks installed earlier using 3" nails. Molding was installed around each unit to cover gaps between wall and closet system. All moldings were caulked, spackled and sanded before applying two coats of paint same color as walls. One day I found the lid, while cleaning, and made this: <br /><br />1: I measured up the existing holes in the celing wire-exit, and drilled two holes in the lid. <br /><br />2: Measured across the lid, to find the widest spot. Then, using the bumb in the lid, I drilled 2 holes, directly  across eachother. <br /><br />3: I cut a piece of rubber wireprotection from an old car, and put it in the holes. This is to avoid the edge of the lid to cut throug the insulation on the wire. <br /><br />4: I replaced the Hemma wire with a green one, I bought in an upscale furniture-store. <br /><br />5: Then the wires was plugged in with the celing wires, and the lid screwed indto the existing holes. <br /><br />6: Lastly, the Sparsam bulps was put in, and the light turned on. <br /><br />It really fits the room well.<br /><br />~ Anders Ehlers, Denmark

While I lack the skills and time to make the same thing for myself, I was looking through the IKEA catalog and the ALEX components made me think, what the heck, I could probably do something similar. <br /><br />additional materials/tools: <br />10 machine screws (pan or truss head) 1/4" x 1-1/2" (mine are #20) with nuts and washers <br />4, 3" casters (i used two locking ones for the front) with 1/2" wood screws <br />drill and 1/4" bit, 3/16" bit, philips-head driver bit <br />handsaw, circular saw or table saw <br />measuring tape <br />screwdrivers and crescent wrench <br /><br />total time: about four hours (not including IKEA run)<br /><br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><b>Step 1: Locate bolts for linking units together </b><br />� Open up one of the VIKA ALEX units and the ALEX flatfile unit. <br />� The back and front of all the units (whether they're doors or drawers or whatever) land inside the frame, so we need to allow for those when placing our holes. for the machine screws I'm using, I'm centering my holes 1-1/8" from the edges. <br />� Start with the drawer unit, since it's going to be the hardest to deal with. i put the drawer sides down on the slides so I could see where the hardware had gaps. 3-1/2" from the top, 7" down from there (back side only), 3-1/2" from the bottom.
