But I'm a designer and I wanted it to have more personality. <br /><br />1. Using InDesign, planned out the shapes I wanted on the shade. <br /><br />2. Printed out the design and using double stick tape adhered it to the shade. Since there is a protective film on the shade it's not harmed. <br /><br />3. I cut the diamond shapes almost all the way from point to point, leaving about 1/16th top and bottom. Assembled the shade and the lamp and had one original shade, made/altered by hand. <br /><br />Plus: I thought about cutting the diamond completely out and put a nice thin fabric or paper inside but started here. Naturally, I took a trip to my local IKEA! <br /><br />Materials: <br />1 x Lobbo lamp shade 6" <br />1 x Lobbo lamp shade 12" <br />1 x Hemma Cord set, white <br />1 x 1/2" x 10ft Electric Conduit (metal pipe) <br />1 x Levitan 15 amp plug <br />1 x Old Ikea floor lamp weighted base with part of the lamp pole <br /><br />I assembled both Lobbos then put the 12" Lobbo over the 6" Lobbo. Then, I fed the Hemma cord through both and fastened the light bulb end to the 6" Lobbo. I then cut the original wall plug off and separated about 2 inches of the inner wires. <br /><br />I bent the conduit pipe around a round weight at a few places starting at 70" up, being careful not to crimp it. Then I drilled a hole in the conduit a couple feet up from the bottom so I could run the Hemma cord out. We ended up using transparent laser mailing labels, stuck to the inside of the shade. The text is printed in reverse (mirrored), so that it reads the right way from the adhesive side of the label. The lettering on the label is only visible when light shines through the lamp shade, which is a cool effect. <br /><br />The sides of the wooden box are 1/4" plywood. The cutouts are about 1/4" longer than the inner pieces, so that they form a lip around the base of the Hemma lamp. <br /><br />The top of the box is made of 1" pine, with a 1/2" hole cut through the center. I used a dado to form a lip around its edge, so that the lid fits inside the box and covers the top edges of the sides. The only way to get the lid around the lamp's stem (without cutting and splicing the power cord) was to cut the lid in half - diagonally, so that it would still be square when reassembled. <br /><br />I used Loctite Sumo glue to attach the wooden box  to the metal base, but I suspect a hot glue gun would work, too. <br /><br />(The inscription's religious - as is the day camp - and it's in Hebrew. Make sure your tiers don't overlap too much (or you'll just be limiting how much light gets through the multiple layers), but enough to not show gaps. If your tiers are similar in diameter (like the 12" and 14"), you can get away with about a 2" overlap. If your tiers are further apart in diameter (like the 6" and 12") you may want more like a 4" overlap. You can also trim off the top or bottom of each tier to adjust the overall shape. The Ikea shades require the frame spokes to poke through the shade and little hardware pieces screw on and hold it in place. Which is why I picked a patterned fabric so you don't really notice the hardware, but I guess you could paint them to match your fabric so they blend in. I'm far too lazy for that. I used small linked chain from Home Depot, they sell it by the foot or the yard. Here's where the spoke frame actually comes in handy. Slide one link of each chain strand onto each spoke before you put the spoke through the shade and screw on the fastener. I also preferred not to mess with electrical wiring. <br /><br />Inspiration struck when I noticed the interlocking puzzle-pieces that make up the Lobbo shades. I could make one in the size I wanted just by buying more and snapping them together. <br /><br />1. I found a wire wreath frame that fits over the light fixture I was retrofitting. <br /><br />2. I wanted a dramatic 24" drum shade, but Lobbo only comes in 6", 12" and 14" diameter sizes. So I bought two 12" Lobbo shades. <br /><br />3. I kept the metal shade holders, but I broke the round center parts off. No tools required for this step; the metal is pretty flimsy, so you can do this with your bare hands by bending the straight parts back and forth until they break. <br /><br />5. I installed the shade holders by threading them through the holes in the shade and used the screw-on caps provided to secure the holders in place. <br /><br />6. I flipped the shade upside down (with the shade holders closer to the top) and threaded the broken ends of the shade holders through the wreath hanger. This secures the shade into its circular shape. <br /><br />7. Finally, I slipped the new drum shade over the bare old chandelier. It fits snugly over the chandelier arms, though it took a bit of adjusting to make sure the whole thing was level.  <br /><br />Cost: $13 for the Lobbo shades. (I already owned the wreath frame and chandelier.) And to think I had coveted that $200 version in the furniture catalog. Woot! <br /><br />~ Katie, Chicago, IL
