Home Depot and Lowes did not carry off-the-shelf door panels that would fit that opening without going custom order. Two sets of 59x92 7/8" HASVIK sliding doors was the most economical solution.    <br /><br />Also, two sets of Everbilt 60 inch sliding door sets were used. Our master bedroom is really quite small and we needed as much storage space for our clothes as we could squeeze in - the Elga was the best fit. However we couldn't agree on colour and finish - I wanted as much light as possible in the room so was inclined towards a white carcass and 3 mirror doors. Husband on the other hand had no interest in seeing himself endlessly reflected and neither of us liked the Aneboda doors. So in the end the Engan doors with black carcass and one mirror door was our only possible compromise. As I'd suspected, it overshadowed our little room but as we were shortly to have no. 2 baby I didn't feel up to doing anything about it for a while. Then, using a Stanley knife, I cut 7 sections of wallpaper to fit the 6 inset panels of the 2 Engan doors plus one trial run (leaving them slightly smaller all round as wallpaper stretches when wet). Next I Mod Podge-ed the back of the wallpaper with a sponge applicator and let it rest for a few minutes then did a trial run applying the paper to the underside of one of the wardrobe shelves. Good job I did as I made a complete mess of it! First time I'd ever done anything with wallpaper and I didn't know about smoothing out the bubbles. If you're thinking of doing this have a look on the internet for advice as I don't think I'm quite an expert on it yet! For what it's worth, I used a dry mini paint-roller fitted with the sponge applicator as my smoothing tool and it worked for me. I also found that the smaller bubbles vanished by the time the paper had dried and luckily all 6  panels are now completely bubble-free.  <br /><br />Next projects in the Borrowed Bedroom grand plan were a lampshade, a gently vamped-up Billy as a bedside table-bookcase and a Ribba/Grundtal storage solution for half-worn clothes.<br /><br /><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7byxvtF-kMuRNHTAXpSQE9WIDutdtSrJI63tbS8gJzgdTMa4Muh2y8LGh6G_91_pF4hcYDnVLc564IaUQOcbuLW4Ejrq3eISWoJdW_EGkxZfuNwmynrBPKj_ohoP1-1pfTwh4gfbJMgI/s1600/rsz_img_2711-753841.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5866812170969623522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7byxvtF-kMuRNHTAXpSQE9WIDutdtSrJI63tbS8gJzgdTMa4Muh2y8LGh6G_91_pF4hcYDnVLc564IaUQOcbuLW4Ejrq3eISWoJdW_EGkxZfuNwmynrBPKj_ohoP1-1pfTwh4gfbJMgI/s640/rsz_img_2711-753841.jpg" width="550" /></a></div><br />Next job in our Borrowed Bedroom was replacing the low and dark Engan bedside units that we had bought to match our Elga wardrobe with white Billy bookcases, very little actual hacking here. These are the 40 wide, 202 tall Billys.  <br />I left the back off - firstly for aesthetic effect to show our paint colour through the shelves and secondly because the only power point in that part of the room is behind the Billy on my side of the bed. This way I can access it whenever I need to. Leaving the back off compromises the stability quite a lot so we've fixed it to the wall with the brackets provided and, if we find it's still not strong enough in a week or two, we'll add brackets under the middle fixed shelf too.  <br /><br />I put solid Olsbo half-doors on the bottom and a glass mini-Olsbo door on the top, inside which I taped the same wallpaper as on the decoupaged Elga to create a theme and hide the contents.  <br /><br />We found the 'bedside table' shelf too high and awkward to reach from the bed, also our iPhone charger cords are a bit too short to reach properly from the power point so I screwed in a Liksidig napkin holder to the bed-side of each Billy (thanks to <a href="http://www.ikeahackers.net/2012/05/romantic-book-shelves.html">this post for the inspiration</a>). I popped a cable drop next to each to hold the charger cables when not in use and now I have my iPad and phone next to me, he has his Kindle and phone.   <br /><br />Perfect.  <br /><br />Last move was to replace our former touch table lamps with Jansjo clamp lamps, we were worried that the touch lamps were a fire hazard as the shelf above them was getting very hot. The Jansjo lights are great as they're nice bright spotlights for reading but can be angled differently to create mood lighting. Our room isn't quite big enough for either an armchair or a towel horse, both classic solutions to the problem of clothes in limbo between wardrobe and laundry-basket. Everybody has this problem so I'm amazed how few decent solutions there are, especially for people with little space to spare. Yet again the internet came to my rescue and this provided the <a href="http://dosfamily.com/2011/04/nesting-no-more-folding/">perfect solution</a>.<br /><br />The only space in our room is a metre-wide inset between the chimney breast and the window. I cut the ends off a longer Ribba with a hacksaw (slow but no power-tools in this house!) - making sure to keep the pre-drilled holes centred. I was eyeing up possibilities around the house when I came across <a href="https://www.onekingslane.com/live-love-home/2012/04/easy-updatedecorative-lampshade/">this</a>.   <br /><br />The plain Fansta lampshade in our bedroom was the perfect candidate for a makeover and would match my lovely new wardrobe - the Fansta is no longer available but the Jara looks pretty similar. I used watered-down PVA (I'd run out of Mod Podge) but I don't recommend it, I found it a messy, awkward job and the paper just wouldn't sit right. The stretching of the paper when wet was impossible to gauge and working inside something with rounded sides was a pain. It looks fine but doesn't stand up to really close scrutiny! If I ever do it again I'll either use something like Pritt Stick or simply tape down one side of the paper to the shade then curve it around the inside and tape down the other side.  <br /><br />Regarding measuring and cutting the wallpaper, I just cut a rectangle off the roll that was quite a bit larger than the shade top-to-bottom then slowly rolled the shade from one side of the paper to the other and drew a pencil line above and below as I rolled. No photos of this I'm afraid, I was far too involved to remember to take any! Then I cut along the pencilled lines and wrapped it around the outside of the shade, trimming and trying it inside the shade as I went til it fit perfectly inside. If it helps, left flat the final paper is banana-shaped.  <br /><br />A couple of annoying things:  <br />1 - you want the pattern to face out of course but the wallpaper will have been rolled the 'wrong' way, it takes a bit of flattening out and counter-rolling and a lot of steady patience to make it unfold out inside the shade without creases.  <br />2 - as mentioned earlier the paper stretches when wet so the actual measurements are almost impossible to get right. My finished shade has a few little air bubbles and the paper doesn't quite go to the edges all the way around which is fine in daylight but as the pattern is visible through the shade when lit it's not as professional a finish as I would like.   <br /><br />But it's so pretty!  <br /><br />~ ioana<div class="blogger-post-footer"><a href="http://www.ikeahackers.net">More hacks on IKEAHackers.net</a></div></content>

I recently finished the hardwood flooring, so this seemed as good a time as any.  <br /><br />I started with a cleat attached to the studs with lag bolts about 12" off the floor. This allowed me to level the Expedits and carry the weight of the clothing without ripping out the drywall. (A painful lesson learned from a previous home...)  <br /><br />I sat each Expedit on the cleat, used the included hardware to attach them to the drywall on top and bottom so that they wouldn't tip forward or slide off the cleat at the bottom. Since the rod for the clothing would be connected toward the front of the unit, I added a second cleat inside the Expedit at the top, attaching it to the stud, then added a couple of long screws through the top of the Expedit into the cleat, making sure to pass through the framing wood inside the Expedit. I created a jig to make hole placement/leveling/wall distance consistent. I bought a new, longer bit to drill through the Expedit, hoping the sharper blade would leave less damage. I would get the bit up to full speed before pushing through and managed to keep the damage to a minimum.  <br /><br />In order to distribute the weight better, I used large bumper washers for mounting, spreading the force across the face of the Expedit instead of the bolt pulling down through the thin walls. Nothing else.<br /><br /><b>Description: </b>I liked the design of the ODDA wardrobe, but a single one was not enough.  My problem was that I have a sloping ceiling so there wasn't enough room for two ODDA's.  <br /><br />My hack consisted in using one and a half out of two wardrobes and combining them into one single unit.  <br /><br />You start by building a normal right half.  <br /><br />Then you have to drill a few 5mm holes to attach the middle shelf of the central part.   <br /><br />The most delicate operation is the shortening of the left side. The panels are hollow and I wanted at clean top edge so I cut the surplus at the bottom and inserted at bit of scrap wood in the void at the bottom.  <br /><br />This panel now needs drilling quite a few new holes because everything has been shifted downwards.   <br /><br />Once the left panel is ready, everything can be assembled like a normal ODDA.  <br /><br />As a side note, what is left over can be assembled into a one-module wardrobe.  <br /><br />My plan is to add an extra compartment with a top-hinged door on top of the right side. It became a storage place for boxes and bags, and so over the Christmas holidays I decided it was time for renovation.  <br /><br />While PAX is great for apartments or lofts where closets per-se do not exist, Expedit  is a great choice for completing existing closets. Only 2 are provided with the unit. If the parts section at the IKEA store stores does not have them, they will order them for you.  <br /><br />- mount units off of the floor to allow for vacuuming and to give a more open look.  <br /><br />Construction:  <br /><br />Rear wall - Expedit 1x5 mounted vertical against left wall 10" off carpet. Supported by cleat under bottom and normal wall mount brackets in all 4 corners. Additional Cleats were then run for mounting 2 levels of closet rods - upper cleat and upper closet brackets need to be flush with top of Expedit (important). Flange sets installed after rod was in place - not to support weight but to give finished look to the rod. Another Expedit 1x5 laid horizontal on top of first Expedit 1x5 and resting on cleat and closet rod brackets (this is why flush is important).  <br /><br />Right wall - Expedit 2x4 mounted horizontal 18" off carpet (cleat and 4 brackets) - provides good height for folding clothes on top of Expedit. The shelves comes original in single column (1x5), double column (2x4), and squares (2x2 - 4x4 - 5x5)   <br /><br />When I was using one whole room for clothes, I wanted to make sure to get most out of it, and I realized that if I used the original measurements of the Expedit series, I would make lots of non valued spaces/gaps on the walls.  <br /><br />The thing with the Expedit parts is that they all have the same depth and height, the length is what makes the difference, this means that if I eg need a single column with 4 boxes instead of 5 which is original, I buy 1 double column (2x4) and 1 single column (1x5) mix the parts and I have the parts needed for single column with 4 boxes... Luckily most of the spare parts I had left, I build non original Expedit shelves and sold them online...:-)  <br /><br />When I had the right combination of non original Expedit's I attached them to each other, inserted some white painted Lekman inserts for getting the drawer function (doubled one of them to get bigger box for dirty clothes in a 1x2 column), the top Expedit Squares, I did not complete, I wanted to install a metal tube so that I could hang up my shirts/jackets etc...  <br /><br />All in all these 2 sides including lots of Lekmann inserts cost me about $1200 subtracted the spare parts shelves sold online, which makes this project not to expensive:-) <br /><br />~ Peik Helly-Hansen, Norway, Oslo

As I didn't want to use some curtains covering some shelves, we decided to build an awesome wardrobe in this space with the BRODER system and the PAX LYNGDAL slyding doors.  <br /><br />First, we built up the BRODER rack. Therefore we used the wall mounted version for the left side of the ledge. There, we used the used the front brackets and applied the small wooden shelves to it. At the edge and the remaining space we used the height extension posts as well as the metal shelves and two clothes rail on the center brackets. We had about 241 cm in the height and 360 cm width to cover. As IKEA does not offer doors with such a size, we used one pair which is 150x236 cm and another one with 250x236cm. To actually make them sliding doors, we built a frame out of wooden strips, which covered all sides and was simply screwed together with the walls, ceiling and floor. We added a notch in the upper strip, so that we were able to plunge the upper rail of the door into it. The lower rail was screwed on top of the strip.  <br /><br />To give it all a bit more style, we bought some LED strips which can change their color and glued them on the leftover space of the frame, so that the glass doors are illuminated from behind.<br /><br />~ Pia, Aachen, Germany

I'm not sure of the Ikea name because I bought it from the "As-Is" section of the store.   <br /><br />Anyway, from the original piece i removed the drawers and the sliders. Sanded the furniture & painted it with white semi-gloss. After drying i lined the inside of the main wardrobe area & the Back of the cubby area with decorative contact paper...could've used wall paper too but wall paper cost more. I attached the short tension rod (short shower curtain rod) i found from a dollar store, on the main part of the wardrobe. Placed the decorative baskets on the cubby and voila! I'm pretty handy with wood moulding and a nail gun, so I figured it wouldn't be too hard to create something that was really cool looking.  <br /><br />Before assembly I painted everything with an oil based primer because the latex primer I tried was having trouble sticking to whatever the pieces of this cabinet are made of. I did not use the trim piece that attaches to the top of the cabinet because I planned to install crown moulding instead.  <br /><br />After sanding the primer, I rolled on a royal blue semi gloss paint to which I added gold glitter, and then assembled all of the pieces. I also added a strip of moulding to the leading edge of each shelf.  All of the moulding was painted with gold spray paint prior to assembly.  The moulding was cut on a miter saw and secured to the cabinet using a nail gun that uses 23 gauge nails (they look like headless straight pins).   <br /><br />I replaced the cheap cabinet knobs that came with the cabinet with some 11" brushed gold handles.  <br /><br />To add a bit of personalization, I purchased two wood letters, painted the sides silver, coated the top with clear spray paint, sprinkled on purple glitter, then added more clear spray.  I secured the letters to each door with glue.  <br /><br />I wanted the cabinet to have a royal quality, so I used a hot glue gun to attach a row of fake plastic gems to each side of the cabinet doors, above and below the handles, and added some to the corners of the crown moulding too.  <br /><br />I'm a big believer in accent lighting, so I added an LED light strip inside the cabinet, and it's wired to a small micro-switch that turns the light on when the right door is opened.  <br /><br />I also added two brushed aluminum clothing hooks to the inside of each door, and then added some <a href="http://www.partsofsweden.co.uk/ikea/furniture-sticker/disney-motives/disney-princesses/">princess themed removable decals</a> to complete the princess theme.<br /><br />~ D. So we headed for Ikea to find a simple and cheap solution.   <br /><br />When I came across the Gorm shelf (the 55cm's wide version - �24,99) it seemed to be perfect in size so I started collecting other items that would do the job of hanging some clothes on. In the end I found the Grundtal rail (kitchen stuff - �3,50) and the Frosta stool (�9,99) to be suitable. The �40 Wardrobe was born!   <br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br />1) So for starters build up the Gorm frame and install the shelves at the lower part of it. This in order to keep space for the hanging section. As you can see in the overview picture, I installed the shelves on each second level from the bottom.  <br /><br />2) Then smash 2 of the brackets that come with the Gorm shelf flat with a hammer. Hang this one over the shelf, then screw the other bracket into a second Frosta foot. The fun part of the Frosta feet and Grundtal rail is that you can slide it forwards and backwards as a drawer. An extra "finishing touch" that I did was screwing two left over Vagen curtain rod wall fittings on the upper side of the shelf, making perfect jeans hangers. I have to admit. I love having lots of space too, but as my collegiate destiny decided, the sweetest flat share I found was at the same time the one with the smallest room. So I decided to move in with the nicest people and to see filling this room in the most beautiful and cheap way as the huge fun it was. It must've been somewhat like that:   <br />'Damn I love Expedit, why don't they do a good closet that way?!'...(two people standing in front of Expedit turning their heads to the right) 'Wait...why don't we just...turn it to the right...' '...put a clothes rail into it...' 'YEAH and some LED-lighting!' 'Yeah!'  <br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br />And that's how it started. I actually just build up the TV storage unit. Turned it to the right. I sawed the sides and back and just followed the IKEA instructions to assemble it.
