My biggest problems were accommodating my extensive library of academic books, and finding space for easily-accessed office supplies. <br /><br />The 28-inch wide (non-IKEA) bookshelves near my dining table, which is now my primary workspace, were only two shelves high.  After filling them with books and stacking another row on top, I realized there was still plenty of room above the top row of books if only I had free-standing shelves (or, as I came to think of them, "shelf-evators) to go over the top.  I didn't want to screw anything into my walls; I wanted something to rest on top of the bookshelves.  I asked the employees at IKEA who said they didn't have anything suitable, but had sometimes used Capita legs and single wall shelves to make something similar for a display. <br /><br />Ekby Viktor shelves were the obvious choice, since their dimensions were very close to the dimensions of my existing shelves, and they were cheap, only $5.99 each.  The problem was that Capita legs are a maximum of 8 inches tall, whereas many of my books were 10 or 11 inches tall.  I decided to find something in the as-is bins that I could use to increase the height of the legs before adding the shelves on top. <br /><br />I found the perfect thing - two Ekby Joxa rails, essentially strips of 1x1 already painted black, marked at $2.50 each. Had I realized this at the store, I would have picked up a shelf of some kind from as-is; however I happened to have one of unknown provenance in my tool bin, exiled there when it didn't find a use after I moved a year ago.  This is why I save things. <br /><br />My biggest limitation was my tools, basically a jigsaw and a c-clamp for holding the work on my kitchen counter.  That's as good as it gets in my apartment.  I marked and cut rectangles from the spare shelf to match the Capita screw plates, approximately 2" x 3.5".  A few of the edges were less than perfect but I could put the most obvious defects toward the back.  I sanded the edges by hand to remove rough spots, spray-painted them black on my sun porch, and when they were dry, marked and drilled pilot holes for the screws that came with the Capita legs.  Easy enough. <br /><br />Cutting the Joxa rail was much harder because it was solid wood rather than particle board.  I originally wanted to cut 3.5" lengths to match the length of the screw plates, but I realized to raise the Viktor shelves 3 inches, I would need 24 pieces out of the two rails (3 pieces per corner, times 4 corners, times 2 shelves) and I came up a few inches short.  I decided to cut the pieces at 3 inches and center them over the Capitas. <br /><br />As I said, cutting the Joxa with just a hand-held jigsaw was very difficult.  I was trying to use a finer-toothed blade in order to minimize splitting on the back side of the cut but this slowed the work down as well.  In the end, I had 24 pieces, but I quickly realized the ends were nowhere near square. <br /><br />I decided to punt and ask for help from a friend who works at a job where there is an excellent wood shop.  The night before, I sorted the Joxa chunks into triads that more or less matched, then glued them together using the Gorilla glue.  After letting them dry about 24 hours, I took them to my friend's wood shop where she set up a jig on her chop saw and squared off the end of each triad.  Back home, I gave them a couple of coats of black spraypaint (turns out I didn't need to buy black railing since painting couldn't be avoided). <br /><br />A day later, I assembled the legs and their risers.  The Capita legs were screwed into the bits of scrap shelving, and then I glued the Joxa blocks to each leg flush with the front edge of the screw plate, centered right to left.  When they were all glued, I left all 8 legs upright with both Viktor shelves balanced on top and weighted down slightly to prevent any possibility of shifting while the glue dried. <br /><br />The most delicate part of the operation was the final step.  I needed to off-set the legs from the ends of the Viktor shelves since they extended slightly past the width of my bookshelves, which also had a half-inch "lip" along each short side.  I determined that I should set each leg 1.5 inches in from the edge of the Viktor shelves, so I marked all 4 corners, put glue on top of the riser attached to each leg, and then laid the Viktor shelves on top of the legs.  This required a helper to get all 4 legs to align with my mark and sit flush against the front or back edge of the Viktor shelf.  We went through this twice, and then I weighted down the shelves while the glue dried. <br /><br />The next day my shelf-evators were ready to go!  Each fit perfectly on the bookshelf below, and only required minimal height adjustments to the Capita legs using the built-in screw mechanism to get them to sit level.  One shelf-evator now holds my printer and lamp, while the other holds various desk and office-supply organizers. <br /><br />~ Sheila A., California

Wipe the table clean with a moist cloth and let it dry. <br />2. Spread the decoupage paper on the table the way you want it to be later. <br />3. Apply a coat of decoupage glue where you want to fix your decoupage paper. Don't apply more than you need for one sheet, otherwise it might dry too quickly and you will have to apply glue again, resulting in thicker layers and uneven results. <br />4. Apply the decoupage paper and try to apply it without bubbles. Be sure to have enough paper overlapping the edges of the table, you will want to wrap it around properly. <br />6. When you finished the applying of decoupage paper on top of the table, go for the small side of the shelf. I glued more decoupage paper than needed on it and after drying I just cut the overlapping rest with a scalpel. <br />7. Coat the entire decoupaged surfaces with decoupage lacquer for a brilliant or a matte finish (you will have to choose yours). Try not to go over the same spot many times, as it may cause the thin paper to break.  <br />8. Allow it to dry about an hour before applying the second layer of lacquer.  <br /><b><br /></b><br /><b>Edge decoration: </b><br /><br />1. Get a golden, silver or copper colored very thin plate of metal.  <br /><br />2. First design your desired edge decoration on paper and hold it on to the edges of your Lack table. If you like it, then it's gonna be your model. <br />3. According to the paper model, cut 4 identical triangles out of the metallic plate. It really has to be thin in order to be cut with normal scissors.  <br />4. Cut the shape into it (here the little bows).  <br />5. We looked around in stores, but everything we saw, was either too small, too expensive or too plasticky. <br /><br />So we decided to take this in our own hands and purchased 3 IKEA Babord Shoe Racks, $9.99, a couple of 2x4s, some IKEA fabric and various accessories (baskets, plastic fruits, miniature cans and bottles). <br /><br />1. For the store front we attached 2x4s at the front corners of the shoe rack. Fine, but I found that all the TV frames sold by Ikea were ugly and did not provide adequate hiding for all the mess involved with the rather "DIY" style I have.  <br /><br />Then I found the idea of using the Besta TV element, devised to go with sliding doors, but with opening doors, cut to size. My goal was to have the TV included in the neat surface of all the white gloss Besta doors. I also wanted to have access to the back side of the TV, for easier cable modifications. I used first a jigsaw for the rough cut, but for a perfect look, I used a handheld router with a copy bit, with a metallic rule as a guide. I am pretty satisfied with the final result (that was a challenge which my father and brother told me "you'll never have a straight cut on Ikea". Then I added a finishing black liner. I do not mention all the adjustment back and forth steps. <br />- install doors with a bit of adaptation, since it is not designed for that... <br />- close everything and enjoy! <br /><br />optional: <br />- install a fan to force hot air (40-50�C) out. I could make one in the size I wanted just by buying more and snapping them together. <br /><br />1. I found a wire wreath frame that fits over the light fixture I was retrofitting. <br /><br />2. I wanted a dramatic 24" drum shade, but Lobbo only comes in 6", 12" and 14" diameter sizes. So I bought two 12" Lobbo shades. <br /><br />3. I kept the metal shade holders, but I broke the round center parts off. No tools required for this step; the metal is pretty flimsy, so you can do this with your bare hands by bending the straight parts back and forth until they break. <br /><br />5. I installed the shade holders by threading them through the holes in the shade and used the screw-on caps provided to secure the holders in place. <br /><br />6. I flipped the shade upside down (with the shade holders closer to the top) and threaded the broken ends of the shade holders through the wreath hanger. This secures the shade into its circular shape. <br /><br />7. Finally, I slipped the new drum shade over the bare old chandelier. It fits snugly over the chandelier arms, though it took a bit of adjusting to make sure the whole thing was level.  <br /><br />Cost: $13 for the Lobbo shades. Next, I pulled the wires through the tiny pipes of the stands. A nightmare for every serious stamp collector, because I will never be able to take it off again and some of the stamps are really rare. Afterwards I covered the stamps with a layer of plastic film, so I can wipe the chest. <br /><br />The compilation looks great, the stamps are on display again and my Rast chest is absolutely unique! <br /><br />It includes stamps from the 60s, 70s and 80s with many animal, flower and dinosaur pictures, from: <br />All over Europe,  <br />Eastern Germany <br />Cambodia <br />Bhutan <br />Congo <br />Russia <br />Togo <br />Benin <br />China <br />Reunion <br />USA <br />Paraguay <br />Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries <br />Cuba <br />South Africa <br />Eastern Europe <br />Australia <br />Liechtenstein <br />and many, many more. <br /><br />I did this some time ago, but I am going to relocate overseas and I cannot take the chest.
